JAKARTA (IndoTelko) - Indonesia is sensing the need to assess the territory issue in the use of the Internet along with the increasingly high penetration of access in the community.

"We can feel the need of internet that is becoming more dominant in our everyday life. Heavy incoming information flow, therefore we have to start thinking about the territory issue in this internet," said Minister of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) Rudiantara, yesterday.

Rudiantara said that the concept of the internet which has abolished distance and time constraints has raised issues of freedom and sovereignty of a country.

"As a country, we certainly do not want all information directly penetrating in. There is sovereignty issues must be maintained. Based on the government's point of view there are now two sides that embraces open free internet with minimal restrictions and on the other hand is very limiting," he said.

Countries that embrace internet openness usually do not have any Internet censorship, thus putting the content responsibility to each user. While in the other side, the state will implement censorship. Sometimes, these sensors not only to dispel the negative content but also used to silence opposition.

"Currently there is no limit in Internet territory, country boundaries and so on. But this is still under an international discussion. We should be starting to discuss this matter in Indonesia. If I see the entrepreneurs, they have started to discuss the Net Neutrality issue," Rudiantara said.

Net Neutrality issue in Indonesia is beginning to be discussed by entrepreneurs, especially since Facebook took Indosat with Internet.org program or the widespread push advertising by operators to specific portals. Amid the controversy of Internet.org, reportedly it already has a million users who joined in Indonesia.(es)
